Numerical Weather Prediction Models (NWP)

NARAC utilizes numerical weather prediction (NWP) model forecasts and analyses appropriate to the area and time of an incident. Several agencies provide these forecasts and analyses:

  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) global and regional simulations and analyses
    • North American Model (NAM), currently running WRF with NMM core
    • Global Forecast System (GFS)
    • Rapid Update Cycler (RUC)
  • Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model output for special regional areas
  • Global NOGAPS model results from the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC)
NARAC utilizes numerical weather prediction model forecasts and analyses from several agencies.
Numerical Weather Prediction Model Results from External Sources
Agency Model Resolution/Coverage
Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) WRF 45 and 15 km resolution, special regional forecasts
Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) NOGAPS 0.5° (~50 km) resolution, global, 3 hr intervals to 72 hrs from 0000 and 1200 UTC daily
NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) NAM (WRF) 12 km resolution, North America Model (NAM)
AVN (GFS) 0.5° (~50 km) resolution, global, 3 hr intervals to 180 hr from four initialization times per day
RUC 13 km resolution, U.S., 1 hr intervals to 9 hrs from hourly initialization times
